Sure I expected a new vacuum to clean my carpet better, but what I didn't expect was for my rug to look five years younger afterwards! My matted carpet was in pretty bad shape and I had little hope of it lasting much longer until I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. But after a good cleaning with this Sanitaire S782 I was very happy to see that my rug seemed to have new life in it and frankly looked like the rug was 5 years younger. I am simply amazed.
Dual motors allow for stopping the direct drive brush assembly going over hardwood floors while still providing lots of suction power which is also good for vacuuming the edges of scatter rugs so they don't get sucked up into the roller. And if something does get caught in the roller the motor shuts off instantly and automatically and you just have to hit the reset button after clearing.
This machine uses bags that are inexpensive and is rated at lightweight commercial use. It's fairly light at 14 pounds, and I like the folding handle making it easy to store away. The only con seems to be the high pitched motor noise which is annoying but I am already getting used to it.
After feeling like I was in a maze of new vacuum options I feel I made a really good choice without spending a fortune.

Tuff Stuff Multi-Purpose Foam Cleaner 22 oz (623 g) Review

Tuff Stuff Multi-Purpose Foam Cleaner 22 oz (623 g)

I have tried many other rug cleaners and formulas for getting rid of all kinds of spots on the carpet and never found anything to really work. Then I found a can of Tuff Stuff Multi-Purpose Foam Cleaner that I had had in my laundry closet for some time and out of desperation decided to give it a try. I LOVE IT!!!!! I couldn't find a spot on the carpet that this product didn't get rid of. Maybe I have unusual spots, but I'm ordering 6 cans right now and hope and pray that the company never "improves" the product or replaces it. This one REALLY WORKS!

Activeion ionator HOM Portable Cleaner and Sanitizer Review

Activeion ionator HOM Portable Cleaner and Sanitizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device has generated controversy here on Amazon, bringing mostly either glowing five star or scathing one star reviews, and the technical discussion has been uninformed. Until such time as the product is evaluated by a neutral expert such as Consumer Reports, I hope to clear up a bit of the scientific side by taking a close look at the information put out by Activeion, a one year old marketing operation in Minneapolis. I have not tested the device myself - nor do I see how anyone could properly test it at home, since that requires a specialized laboratory. This is an engineering analysis; I studied a laboratory test of alleged bacteriocidal properties which the company sponsored and frequently refers to, I analyzed some of the company's patent applications, and I applied my own scientific background in physics and chemistry.
The Activeion product claims to convert ordinary tap water into a powerful cleaning agent and disinfectant by means of an electrochemical process implemented in a handheld spray bottle. The bottle incorporates a battery to pass a current through the water, together with a type of ion exchange (electrolytic) membrane. The basic chemistry is far from new; in fact the phenomenon of electrolysis and its use in producing bleach or chlorine were discovered in the late 1700's, around the time of Benjamin Franklin! It is important to know that the process relies not on water but on SALT water. The method used by the Tennant Company, a manufacturer of commercial cleaning equipment and the corporate parent of Activeion, yields what is usually called "Electrolyzed Water" or "Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water" (EOW). There are several places to read about the relevant chemistry, which can be found by Googling terms such as "electrochemistry" or "electrolysis," or on Wikipedia. Tennant is not the only company which offers this type of technology; there are others such as Electrolyzer Corp., Ecopep Electrocide, and EcaFlo Anolyte, the latter of which has been certified by the EPA as a broad spectrum disinfectant.
Without going into too much detail, the electrolysis process converts salt water into two streams, of which one side generates sodium hypochlorite (otherwise known as ordinary laundry bleach) solution, which of course is a widely used cleaning agent and disinfectant. (I note that Tennant claims in other patent applications, such as 2007/0187261 - which can be searched from the USPTO website - that a nanobubble mechanism also comes into play. More recently their website switched to talking about a third mechanism, "electroporation" as the antibacterial action. But let's keep this discussion to what seems the primary process.) In the version used by Activeion the two streams are recombined which means the two liquids cancel each other out, and revert to plain salt water. But by and large, the end effect is a short-acting solution which is not very different from adding a few drops of inexpensive bleach to one's water bottle, spraying and then quickly wiping it off.
There are some key factors to appreciate about the process. The first is that it is dependent on the incoming water containing a sufficient amount of salt (sodium chloride), without which the water will have no conductivity for electric current and also generate no hypochlorite. Thus pure distilled water or deionized water will not work at all, and in general the efficiency of the process is highly dependent on the exact analysis of the available water, how much salt, how much other minerals. In fact the Tennant patent referenced above says that the water needs to have a certain minimum of salt content to work properly, about 6 grams per liter. But everyone knows that tap water supplies around the U.S. vary tremendously in hardness and salinity.
Second, the process is energy intensive. A significant amount of electric power is required to convert part of the input salt water to bleach in any useful quantity. Third, the cleaning effect of the electrolyzed water is rather mild. Another of Tennant's patent applications, 2009/0120460, reports some measurements they made for carpet cleaning. In that case, by Tennant's own tests, it was only about 20% more effective than plain water, and not nearly as effective as a standard detergent solution. And this was for the large industrial version of the machine, not the handheld, and the solution was also allowed to soak into the carpet for several MINUTES before it was sucked up. So even under these idealized conditions, it had only a mild cleaning effect, and the required soak time makes it impractical for many tasks.
Even if the item being sold here works exactly as claimed, all it appears to do is convert salty water into a sort of temporary weak bleach solution, which is chemically the same as you would buy at the supermarket. The same. It is misleading to say that you will be using 'only pure water to clean, in place of harmful chemicals.' Activeion describes the cleaning as using an 'activated' form of water, which is inaccurate; it is more correct to say that the indispensable ingredient is sodium chloride. Salt may be benign, but once you break it up chemically into sodium and chlorine ions, it becomes potentially harsh. The chloride ion is highly reactive chemically and a well known bacteriocide (swimming pools, water treatment). In its pure form, chlorine gas is not only a 'harmful chemical' but highly toxic - it was used as a poison gas in World War I. The liquid produced by the Activeion is a temporary form of the identical chemical found in Chlorox; except for being short acting, it is not more green or less toxic. As Tennant themselves write in the first referenced patent filing, "the anolyte .. is acidic in nature and contains very strong oxidants in the form of active chlorine" .. and .. "care should be taken on surfaces having a potential for corrosion." In other words, Tennant says that the liquid sprayed out by this bottle could pit and scar a metal surface! It produces chlorine; only a quite expensive form of chlorine. Indeed, way more expensive, since $180 will buy you enough Chlorox to last an ordinary household hundreds of years. The only undeniably green thing about chlorine is its color - yellowish green.
Taking all this into account, the remaining question is really whether the scaled down, handheld device being sold here is actually effective in producing a strong enough solution to do anything useful. So next let's move from the theory to exactly what Activeion claims to be the laboratory proof that their handheld device is "99.99% effective in killing E. coli bacteria." The relevant document is posted on Activeion's website in the form of a report they sponsored from ATS Labs in Eagan, Minnesota, a company which carries out bacteriological tests for a fee. The key word here is "sponsored" - the company paid ATS to do this. Amazon won't allow posting of a link, but you'll find it if you look, or see Comment #1 below. I read this report carefully.
Now think back to junior high school. Suppose someone asked you to test a spray bottle which converts tap water into an antibacterial, how would you go about doing that? Well, if you had the expertise gained from taking ninth grade General Science, you would probably prepare three glass slides with a standard bacterial load on each (such as letting your dog lick each one). One you would keep aside as a control. The second you would dip in your local tap water - which of course you would obtain from your very own tap. Even better, you might use a range of tap waters from different sources. The third slide would be treated with the same water squirted through the magic spray bottle you were trying to test. This would make a great science project, and you might get to represent your school at the state fair!
Pretty logical, right? But - amazingly - this is not what ATS Labs did at all. Instead, they signed a contract with Activeion which required (this is all written down in the report) that ATS would use only the `tap water' provided to them by Activeion, and furthermore they had to promise NOT TO ANALYZE IT in any way. No suspense here by the way - it did end up killing the bacteria. Annihilated them. Are you surprised?
In fact, it is not quite accurate to say that Activeion insisted on providing the testing lab with their own preferred `tap water.' To be more precise, they supplied an UNKNOWN LIQUID. There is absolutely no way to know what was in that liquid - and significantly, ATS was also required to GIVE IT ALL BACK at the end of the tests, and not retain a sample - which I found a bit suspicious. It could have been some kind of tap water, or highly concentrated salt water, or distilled water, or it could have been not water at all but commercial bleach, or another disinfectant, or battery acid, or Chanel Number 5, or the kind of cheap tequila used at frat parties to make large volumes of bad margaritas. Activeion made sure there was no way to ever know.
Furthermore, it is considered a procedural error for a consumer product testing lab to accept the handheld spray/processing unit direct from the company; instead it should have been purchased from a regular retail channel. Normally I would not be concerned but in this case - given Activeion's unusually intense and fervent campaign to market this - the company might not be above providing a souped-up unit to fake the test, which they could do for example by replacing a cheap ion exchange filter with a more expensive, high performance version, or installing more powerful batteries. This is why, to eliminate any such doubts, Consumer Reports buys all their products at retail and accepts nothing direct from the manufacturer.
In other words, the ATS Labs antibacterial test pointed to by Activeion as a pillar of their credibility...Read more›

Brand New Kirby Diamond (G9) Limited Edition Upright Home Cleaning System w/ Warranty Review

Brand New Kirby Diamond (G9) Limited Edition Upright Home Cleaning System w/ Warranty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a new Kirby last year and it does a great job. It has such powerful suction, you can see it almost lift the carpet off the floor. With the auto drive, it is very easy to push on the carpet. You can do it with one finger. It has an attachment for just about any cleaning job you want, including shampooing your carpets.
I guess my biggest complaint is that you need to take off the front part to attach and use the hose. That is really inconvenient when wanting to get at baseboards. You either finish up vacuuming, then change the hose attachment and go around to each room again and do the baseboards. Or you have to change it while in each room and back again.
My second complaint is the weight of the machine. It's heavy for a woman to carry up and down stairs, or to use cleaning the mattress.
If you don't mind the draw backs, this machine will clean like no other and should last a lifetime with few repairs.

iRobot Roomba 4210 Discovery Vacuuming Robot, White Review

iRobot Roomba 4210 Discovery Vacuuming Robot, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:
1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.
1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.
iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.
2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.
3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.
4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.
I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. [...] I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.
Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.
Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.
I hope this helps.

The photo looks better than the actual rug, it's not the exact color, but my biggest compaint is it won't lay flat, it's all crinked up from being rolled up and not heavy enough to ease out of it on its own spread out flat. Have to be careful not to get tripped up on the edge of it when I walk into the room. It just is not good looking as it is. I think it's the carpet weight that's a factor.

I like this vacuum very much. It is small and light weight and has a longer than usual suction tube. We have mostly hard floors and the attachment for that works very well. Unlike others I've had in the past that just rattle over the surface ineffectively, this one actually works. I have had trouble with the wand detaching from the tube part and the attachment brush doesn't pivot on the wand, but these are small issues and I have adapted. Definitely worth the money.

Dyson DC07 All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC07 All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one powerful vacuum. I researched it on the internet (Dyson has a great web site) and read about it in a couple of magazines. I was impressed and decided to try it. After using it in my country home I can say it's close to, but not, alas, perfect for my needs. I have a mixture of floor surfaces; hard wood, linoleum, tile, wall to wall carpet and LOTS of area rugs. And I have plenty of dirt, pets and people running through the house in all seasons. The Dyson is great on everything EXCEPT the area rugs, which it has a tendency to try to gobble up... The suction power is irrefutable and I will never look at my (or anyone else's) carpets the same way again. I pulled 3 cannisters of dirt, hair and sand out of my 8' x 11' area rug with the first use of the Dyson after a recent run over the same rug with my old vacuum! Unfortunately, the Dyson also tried to eat the area rug and made a horrible sound while doing so. After a toll free call to Dyson's service center (at 5:30 pm on a Sunday evening) I was instructed to turn off the "beater brushes" and use the mode for bare floors. The horrendous sound and the "gobbling" stopped, but unfortunately without the beater brush, the machine did not do an adequate cleaning job on the area rug.
PROS: quiet operation, very powerful, easy to clean dirt cannister, super long cord, super long "expanding" hose with attachments makes cleaning stairs, crevices and window sills easy, great on wall to wall carpet and hard wood, tile and linoleum floors, carries tools on board, light weight and easy to manuever without self-propulsion, lifetime air filters and bagless design saves money and the environment, GREAT phone based customer support.
CONS: pricey, encounters problems with area rugs, difficult to assemble out of box (required a call to toll free customer service to solve an assembly problem), instruction booklet a little sparse, mostly plastic parts raise some concern with a new product, at [this price] all the accessories (floor tool and pet hair tool) should be standard -- NOT "extras", poor response from e-mail customer service on their web site, unable to purchase "accessories" right now and not able to find out from company when these will be available.
RECOMMENDED? Yes BUT with some reservations - if you have hard floor and/or wall to wall carpet surfaces and are willing to pay for good design and power with convenience, this might be the right vacuum for you. If you have lots of large, area rugs, you might want to consider something else

Rugs are beautiful and the colors are pretty true to the picture, brown, red a nice corn yellow and olive green. I actually brought 4 of them to use on my decks and patio. The 5X8 works nicely with an outdoor sofa and chairs in my 10X10 Gazebo, and the 6X9 look really great under dining sets on a large deck. I have a pool deck and it is great to walk on after getting out of the water! I was able to find fabric in a local fabric store that worked well with the warm colors and had several outdoor cushions made for my outdoor furniture. Makes it feel like an extension of my home! We have had about 4 storms since I put the rugs down and there is no evidence of fading. The price was very reasonable for the quality. LOVE THESE RUGS!!

Rug Rat all Purpose Turbine Power Vac Review

Rug Rat all Purpose Turbine Power Vac
Average Reviews:

The Rug Rat is a turbine-driven carpet-beater vacuum head. The airflow that grabs the dirt is also used to spin the brush; it doesn't use electricity. It works well as long as you have good suction (that's the force) and don't press too hard.
The trick is to keep your suction up. You will need a central vac or shop-vac, not a regular canister vac, to drive this. And even with suction, the trick is to get it up to speed and then engage the carpet, lifting whenever it slows. So it's not as good a performer as if a motor were driving the brush. But it is an adequate way to clean stairs.

iRobot Roomba 510 Vacuuming Robot Review

iRobot Roomba 510 Vacuuming Robot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No, this is not going to be a review telling you how awful the Roomba is. Actually, the 510 is a really wonderful maintenance robot. The problem is that for just a little more you can get the Roomba 530 which comes with the Home Base. What that means is you never have to plug in your Roomba to recharge it: whenever it's done cleaning it automatically goes back to the home base for charging. Although the Home Base is available separately, it is not compatible with this model, leaving you with no upgrade path should you ever want this extremely convenient feature.
More expensive models have a timer for programmable operation (Roomba 560) and even a remote control (Roomba 580t).
All models are identical in terms of performance. The diminutive size and quiet operation would lead you to believe these are little toys akin to hand vacs... until you get back to a thoroughly cleaned room.
I set the 510 loose on the cats room, where the little devils send litter flying everywhere. The room has hardwood floors and an area rug. When I came back, the Roomba was sitting proudly in the middle of the room, and the rug was spotless. There was hardly a trace of litter or cat hair on the hardwood floors, either.
So, the Roomba is definitely a thumbs up. However, I wish I had paid more attention to the product line and at least picked the model that docks back to the home base. The 510 is potentially a tripping hazard, so it's well worth the extra fifty dollars to move up to the model 530.

I just finished a major home remodel on a home with a raised foundation with a wood floor. I had my electrican but in boxes in the floors in my living room and family room. I had the hardwood floors laid down and then ordered this product. I didn't use this product because it would have required me to make a router jib to remove about an 1/8 th inch of material around the opening to accomodate the brass face plate which has a lip inside that protrudes beyond the dimensions of the box itself. I found a similar product from another manufacturer that was $30.00 cheaper and provided a faceplate that fit tight to the floor without any additional routing/chiselling required. The brass finish also looked nicer.
