we LOVE this vacuum! our floors are tiled and it cleans them perfectly, not a cat hair escapes. it's fast, has superb suction, and is far quieter than most other vacuums (which, given its supersuction, is somewhat surprising). it's equally skilled at carpeting and furniture - we'll never buy another vacuum again.

Bissell Healthy Home Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 12 Amp, 16N5 Review

Bissell Healthy Home Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 12 Amp, 16N5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the original Bissell Healthy Home vac for nearly two years and have been extremely pleased with it. This updated version builds upon the strengths of the original and adds a few new features.
My biggest complaint with the original Healthy Home was the weight. Bissell has addressed this common complaint by making the new model lighter by a few pounds. But, the lighter weight appears to come at the expense of solid construction - parts like the handle and collection bin feel less substantial. I know you can't equate durability with weight, but my initial impression of the new model was that it's less resistant to the knocks and bruises that vacs tend to take. Too early to tell, however. It has a five year warranty like the old model.
Assembly is a snap - two screws for the handle (which are no longer recessed, so they are easy to get in) and two screws for the cord wrap.
Operationally, the new vac preforms just as well as the old model. I have seven cats. Yes, seven. This is the house where vacuums get put to the test. The Bissell takes all that is thrown at it with nary a problem. The carpet suction is excellent; the tool suction is good. Easy to maneuver with large, non-marring wheels.
As in the old model, the carpet beater can be turned off for hard floor or very delicate/thin carpet use. The switches have been repositioned so they are less prone to being hit accidentally. The beater has a clutch, so if it gets bound up in something it stops turning rather than burn out the belt. The belt is (according to Bissell) a "life time" belt.
The carpet height is adjustable with a knob. I prefer that type of manual adjustment since the auto adjust models from other brands never seem to get it right on some carpets. Doing it manually lets you set a higher height for more delicate rugs, and a lower, more aggressive height for rugs that need to be churned up more to get the pet hair/dirt out.
The HEPA filter has been moved from the side of the vac to under the collection bin. According to Bissell this allows for better functionality/cleaner exhaust. Seems to work fine, but the old method also worked well. Having the filter in-line does make the vac narrower - that's probably the main benefit.
It still has the foam (washable) pre-filter. Great feature to have since it extends the life of the non-washable HEPA. I've been getting about 18 months life out of the HEPA filters in the old model.
The hose routing has been changed. It's a bit harder to dislodge than the old model for tool use, but still fairly easy compared with other vacs I've used.
The collection bin is also easy to take off and empty. I prefer bagless since I can't stand paying for bags. The new bin has straight sides to help get all the crud out. Still, dumping out the bin of any bagless vac can be messy, and you sometimes have to reach in to get out the big clumps of light-weight material (such as cat hair). If you have major allergies or just don't like to deal with this, you may want to consider a bagged model.
Tips:
1) Every so often take the collection bin apart and wash it out. Very fine dust can collect in the upper cyclonic chamber, and can affect performance. Make sure all parts are bone dry before putting them back on the vac.
2) I recommend you replace the plastic wand with an aluminum wand. You can get it at the Bissell site online (register online and you'll get free shipping). The metal wand is more robust than the plastic and also has positive click stops to ensure it does not fold up when you push hard.
3) The contour head is also a nice add-on if you have pets. It is a non-powered head (unlike the included turbo head) which is good for more delicate fabrics or furniture throws with loose threads that can snag. You can get it from Bissell or Amazon.
4) If you want a full-size floor brush, the models from Sears fit the Bissell.
In summary, this is an excellent vac. The new model takes a couple of steps forward and perhaps only a half-step back (construction quality). If you can get the old model at a discount, it's well worth it if you can deal with the weight. If not, this model is also highly recommended.

Equipped with a 12 amp motor, the Bissell 16N5 Healthy Home bagless upright vacuum cleaner features an AireTight HEPA filtration system that traps and seals in 100 percent of dust mites, pollen, ragweed, mold spores and 99.9 percent of pet dander. It also offers Bissell's Microban antimicrobial protection, which works to continuously fight the growth of odor causing bacteria, mold and mildew. The multi-cyclonic system uses centrifugal force instead of filters to separate the dirt and particles, helping it stay clean longer and resulting in non-stop suction. And the permanent filter also eliminates the need to buy and replace filters, saving you time and money.
It's a great choice for both carpeted and bare floors as well as upholstery and stairs. Use the TurboBrush for upholstery and stairs, the crevice tool to access narrow spaces, the extension wand for extended reach, and the combination upholstery/dusting brush to clean tabletops, bookshelves, furniture, and more. Other features include a wide 15-inch cleaning path, 7 surface height adjustments, a 15-ounce dirt cup capacity, 30-inch cord length, fingertip controls on the handle, soft bumper to protect walls and furniture, and a headlight. The unit weighs 30 pounds and it's backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Bissell 5770 Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum Review

Bissell 5770 Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE : 2/11/09 See Note Below if you own this unit...
I purchased this as a replacement for a Dyson DC-15 Animal. The Dyson had a high pitched noise that gave both my wife and I a headache. I found I could vacuum with an IPOD on loud, and she could manage it with earplugs. After giving 2 DC-15's a try I started my vacuum search again bought the 5770.
The Good:
1). This vacuum is a great value when compared to the Dyson.
2). The suction is just as good or better than most Dyson's (a sales guy told me the DC-17 has slightly more, but both are great). When vacuuming after the DC-15 the Bissell picked up more stuff. I noticed that the first vacuum with the DC-15 got a bunch of junk out my carpet, but after that it was just a little... This picked up as much dirt as the DC-15 did originally, so I was impressed.
3). It comes standard with the turbo brush, and all the small tools you need. The standard brush attachment is really pretty cool as it is a standard long bristle brush, but then can pull apart and become a short bristle brush in case you need to really scrub something.
4). The hose is great. It's flexible and actually reaches to the top of the stairs (unlike the Dyson).
5). The front end is low to get into short spaces below furniture etc. and it does have a headlight. I thought the headlight was no big deal, but when the extra long cord allowed me to vacuum into a dark room the headlight actually helped out.
6). You can turn the beater brush on and off with a touch of a button. When you stand the unit up it automatically shuts off. The brush also has a separate motor. The Brush is very stiff, like a Dyson, but the bristles are shorter, I believe this makes it easier on your carpet. The Dyson started pulling up lose carpet fibers from the edges of my carpet, I think, because of the longer bristle brush. The Bissell seems to be gentler on my carpet but at the same time it makes the carpet fibers stand right up and look like new. It also has a height adjustment, which, depending on your point of view, is a good thing.
7). It's Quiet! You can actually talk to someone while vacuuming. Don't get me wrong it's still a vacuum, there is still noise, but it's a lower muffled sound that is easy to listen to.
The Bad:
1). It's Heavy! In fact, we almost returned this unit and started looking for something else that would work for us. We ended up keeping the unit, but we took a good couple of days vacuuming the house and thinking it over. Half jokingly I said let's think of this as an exercise machine that just happens to clean the house!
I would recommend taking some time to test this in the store, pushing it around on some carpet (with a pad) like you have at home to get a true feeling for it. Initially (after the wonderfully easy to maneuver DC-15 Ball) it seemed really heavy. After a few days we're used to it and it doesn't seem bad at all.
2). Bissell got the dirt canister wrong, Dyson wins this battle. The canister is in a slight "V" shape so lots of dirt on the top of the pile must somehow compact a bit to fit through a smaller area on the bottom, kind of like going through a funnel. Water flows nicely through a funnel... Dirt does not. The release button is not right on top, like the dyson, so it's a two handed deal to hold the canister and then press the button to release the dirt. Next, the trap door at the bottom is not spring loaded, like the dyson, so it may or may not open, so you might need to flick it open with your finger. The trick with your finger may or may not get you dusty, because the dirt may not just dump out because the nice "V" shape of the unit keeps it in place, maybe this is a good feature? Joking aside, this really could be improved and I hope Bissell does this on future models because it really is a great vacuum.
I justified this dirt canister problem by comparing it to the Dyson... Fluffy stuff (hair, carpet fibers etc.) would get stuck in their dust bin as well, not as much, but it happened. Also, after a few uses the little holes in the inside bottom part of the cyclone clog up so it's a messy job to clean that up. The bottom line here is I think you empty the canister a little more often and your fine, but the nature of either beast is that you're going to have some dirty work ahead of you at some point. It's just the price you pay for superior suction.
Hope this helps!
Update 2/11/09:
Just under the two year mark the brush started to get noisey and smell. Unlike a vacuum from the old days you can't just throw in a new brush and belt. I called Bissell and they had me send the unit back and sent me a refurbished unit.
The Bad: Being a 'Mr. Fixit' kind of guy, I took this apart prior to calling Bissell. (I didn't remember there was a 2 year warranty). The brush bearing cap on one end was worn and the plastic started to melt. There is are mounting/stabilization points near the belt and these were badly worn/melted as well. You cannot fix these mounting points as they are part of the top and bottom of the unit. I have no idea what this would cost to replace, but I'd guess a lot. This seems to be a bad design. Maybe I just had a bad brush, but I don't think so...
The Key is to find the problem prior to the mounting points being destroyed. They do have a bushing that looks like it can be replaced so this should save big $$ on a repair.
What you should do: If you own this unit, or are thinking about buying one, about once a month do the following:
1. Flip the unit over to expose the brush.
2. Remove the junk that gets stuck in the brush.
3. Grab the brush on one end and try to move it up and down or side to side. The brush should be solid and only move round and round.
4. Repeat step 3 on the other side.
Note: If you can move the brush it's starting to go bad. Call Bissell to find the nearest repair facility if your out of warranty. If you're in warranty they'll replace it for you.
I got my refurbed unit today, it works great!

Hoover Multi-Cyclonic Canister Vacuum Review

Hoover Multi-Cyclonic Canister Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this vacuum 2 weeks ago. It is sold by and ships from Target Stores. I waited over a month for the vacuum to be in-stock. Was so excited to finally get it. The Hoover Multi-Cyclonic canister is, in reality, a fantastic copy of the world-famous Dyson DC05 MotorHead model vacuum cleaner. The Dyson DC05 was designed for British homes - the Hoover was designed for American Homes. And boy, did Hoover do a fantastic job.
The Hoover features, among other things, perfect edge cleaning. The brush bristles splay out at the ends, brushing all the way to the edge of the carpets, against the walls. The suction power is amazing. The multi-cyclonic filtration system works exactly like Dyson's (the Dyson patents are expired). The Hoover is easy to empty without flying dust - due to the 'cup' design of the trap door on the clear bin. When you pull the Hoover, it rears back on it's rear wheels - cutting the effort needed to pull the machine by one half.
The best part, though, is the steel extension wand. All vacuums should have this adjustable length, all steel wand to help speed you through your cleaning. The brush in the nozzle will stop for bare floor cleaning, and rotates for carpet vacuuming. The belt will never break or stretch - the nozzle brush stops when obstructed and a red light comes on. Remove the obstruction and turn the nozzle back on to reset.
The washable, lifetime filters - both before and after the motor - are exactly what's needed to keep costs down. With no replacement filter cost AND a true 'sealed system' (dust cannot leak past the S-Class Hepa filter cartridge) - the Hoover will always put clean air back into the room and will never cost one penny for filter replacements.
Even the attachment tools fit on very well - they don't fall off in use (a particular frustration with some models and makes of vacuums). I like everything about the Hoover except the cord length. If Hoover had used a flat cord instead of the round one - they coule have fit more length onto the automatic cord rewinder. But that's a small concession to such excellent cleaning ability, light weight, and fantastic low price. All in all, EXCELLENT.

Electrolux EL6984A UltraSilencer Green Canister Vacuum Cleaner Review

Electrolux EL6984A UltraSilencer Green Canister Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We finally made the plunge and converted from carpet to hardwood floors. So naturally we needed new equipment for cleaning floors. Growing up, my parents always had Electrolux vacuum cleaners, the cylindrical (heavy!) bag types, and they seemed to work forever! We went looking around to all the dept stores and home improvement places, read some reviews (on Amazon) and decided that this model would be very nice. We didn't actually try it out at the stores, but checked the features, build quality and sturdiness.
All seemed good, and we ordered one on Amazon.
As is usually the case, the items arrived quickly and in very good shape.
Having run this unit through its paces several times now, I can say that it lives up to our expectations and needs extremely well!
It is light (a very big plus for my spouse), maneuverable and QUIET.....The slider control for the motor speed (and therefore suction level)is very convenient and smooth. We like the bag approach as well as the HEPA filter. Some people may feel the bag is a hassle to have to replace - Having had to empty out the old upright bagless canister, I can safely say that the bag is MUCH better. You don't have to deal with the dust, smell and stuff in the canister!
The self winding cord is also very smooth and sufficiently long to give good range for vacuuming.
It has the usual complement of attachments to get in small out of the way places and to vacuum furniture. The tube can be adjusted to any length which is nice.
I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers are trying to pick up but for hardwood or tiles floors and even (low pile rugs)this little "egg" works just fine and efficiently picks up dust, hair, pet dander, etc....
Bottom line: I recommend this vacuum cleaner.

Combining an eco-friendly design with user-friendly features, this canister vacuum cleaner makes it easy to keep the home clean, from top to bottom. The portable unit maneuvers smoothly from room to room on two large wheels, and it transitions effortlessly from carpets and rugs to bare-floor surfaces like tile, linoleum, or hard wood. Simply slide the lever on the carpet/hard-floor nozzle into position--from "normal" to "brush". For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum provides an array of on-board attachments including a telescopic tube, a hose and hose handle, a crevice tool, and a combination nozzle/brush for curtains, bookshelves, frames, and more. Other highlights include a high-efficiency motor, low noise output of only 60 DBA, a replaceable motor filter, and a bag-full indicator, as well as a foot-activated on/off button, a carrying handle, and adjustable suction power (offers suction control on the vacuum cleaner and on the hose handle). When finished, a foot pedal rewinds the cord into the unit for compact storage. A dust bag (s-bag) comes included. Designed with a healthier planet in mind, the vacuum cleaner's construction features 55-percent plastic from recycled materials, plus 80-percent of its packaging comes from recycled unbleached cardboard. The vacuum cleaner measures approximately 12-1/2 by 11 by 14 inches and carries a two-year limited warranty.
